Bower Studio - Melbourne School of Design

In 2016 I participated in the Melbourne School of Design Bower Studio. As part of this studio I traveled to the remote Indigenous town Kalkarindji in Australia's Northern Territory. Kalkarindji and the nearby town Daguragu are located on the traditional homelands of the Gurindji people. In 1966 Gurindji elders famously led the Walk-Off from the Wave Hill cattle station, a pivotal moment in Australian history and a precursor of the Aboriginal land rights movement. Whilst in the community we built a series of architectural pavilions alongside local workers to commemorate the Walk-Off route in lead up to the 50th Freedom Day celebrations. On our return we were invited to develop a concept for a new arts and cultural center for the community. My design concept and reflective journal are given below:
